Girls Soccer start pre-season
Coaches and players begin to prep for upcoming season
The girls varsity soccer team is ready for the season with conditioning that started back in September.
“Our goal for this season is to win the CMAC,” said assistant coach Brandon Gettman, who has been coaching for four years. “After the success of last season, I think it’s easy for us to set our sights on another Valley Championship, but it’s important to take care of league first and then build towards a playoff push.”
Gettman added that the heart of the team’s defense is what really stands out.
“Shayne Stewart, Alyssa Avalos and Maddy Wolf have been our defense core for three years now,” said Gettman. “Each year we’ve conceded fewer goals and that is a reflection on their skill and continual improvement.”
Head coach Angel Cabral encourages the team’s newest members to be patient and practice a lot.
“Never give up and there is always room of improvement,” said Cabral, who has been at Sanger High for six years, two of which as the varsity head coach. “My goal for this season is to continue the level of competition from last year,” said Cabral. “My expectations for this season are to have a good outcome by the end of the season.”
Alyssa Avalos is a four year varsity player and an outstanding defensive player, according to Cabral. She will be heading to Fresno Pacific University to continue her soccer career.
“My goal is to finish my high school career with a successful season. I hope our team becomes back to back league champs and works hard every day to reach all of our goals and expectations this season,” said Avalos.
Avalos is excited for this season and for one last ride with this team.
“I can not wait to start this season back up and to hopefully have a successful season of becoming back to back champs. This team will always have a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to have one last season with all of my teammates,” said Avalos.
Senior Shayne Stewart loves being a part of Sanger High’s girls soccer team.
“I’m excited to see what we will accomplish together this year,”said Stewart.
Stewart’s goal for this year is for the team to reach some of last year’s big accomplishments.
“My hope for the team this year is to continue last year’s season record and work hard enough to reach last year’s achievements,” said Stewart.
Cabral also finds a lot of love and joy in being a coach.
“What I enjoy the most is seeing the student’s dedication and the love of the sport that I grew up with and that is part of my culture,” said Cabral.
Cabral and Gettman both have a history and love for soccer. Cabral, who has been playing soccer for over 15 years, used to play at Sunnyside High from 2006-2010. Gettman, who has also played soccer for several years, used to play for Buchanan High and also played at Fresno Pacific University.
The two coaches have great expectations and goals for this year’s team and their new season.
“I enjoy the team and individual growth aspect the most. Seeing players grow after all the hours they’ve committed to improving never gets old,” said Gettman. “They’ve created a culture of winning and fun. When others see that, they want to be a part of it,” said Gettman.
