Starting the 2024-2025 school year, Sanger High School Administration enforced a new bathroom policy. In previous years, the Administration enforced bathroom lanyards, but this year the new bathroom vests were set in place by Principal Kristin Coronado. “It’s my responsibility to make sure everybody is safe and accounted for,” said Coronado.
Coronado goes on to say that an issue in previous years was that students would be out and roaming around and weren’t exactly identifiable. “So with the vests, it’s easily identifiable that they should be out of the classroom, and they are allowed to be out of the classroom.”
Some changes seen so far include security being able to support students, and getting them back to class efficiently. Coronado even says they’ve seen a decrease in inappropriate bathroom behavior.
Staff has embraced the new vests, Coronado states. “I feel it is a good way to try to deter students from overusing the bathroom,” said Spanish/ELD Teacher Ana Flore.
They are decently manageable Flores states. “In my personal opinion I don’t feel they are doing the job because every time I go outside I see a lot of students walking (wearing the green vests),” but they are good in theory, Flores mentions.
When asking students’ about the vests, Sophomore Seerat Dahanda states “They are very unhygienic and inconvenient.” Dahanda recommends lanyards instead as they are “less of a hassle and they are more hygienic.”
Dahanda claims they are not fixing the problem of students misusing the bathroom pass. “I think it’s gross and unhygienic that everyone touches them with unwashed hands.“
“I’m open to suggestions, I know that I’ve heard different viewpoints on the vests, and that is perfectly acceptable. We have a principals forum so if someone wants to come and talk to me about it or they can come and talk to me any time,” states Coronado.
