With the 2024-2025 Sanger High School Girls Tennis season underway, players and their coach are finding their stride. Under the direction of the girl’s Coach Jeremy Warkentin, the goal is to win.
“We set team goals for ourselves and achieving those goals is our motivation,” states Warkentin. Before their matches they set goals for themselves to boost the girls confidence. Warkentin has been a coach for Girls Tennis at Sanger High School for 18 years, including this year.
“The tennis team season is going very well so far,” says Darby Carr, freshman tennis player.
“We have won most of our matches so far and hopefully in the future we can win CMAC,” adds Carr.
At the time, the girls tennis team court was not quite finished, but this certainly did not stop the girls from practicing as hard as they can.
“Right now I’m so excited for the courts to be done, but at WAMS it’s not that bad except that we can’t have any home games,” states Carr. “It has been a bit crazy not practicing on the high school courts and having to travel to the junior high to practice,” said Carr.
“It is hard to choose one specific person as the best because each girl on the team displays amazing leadership and diligence. However, I would say Jaydee Rawls has stood out because she is always willing to help out and do her best no matter what is happening,” Carr also acknowledges Lizzy’s contribution as a leader, a great tennis player, hard worker and genuinely a sweet person.
Coach Warkentin says that the most difficult part of coaching is balancing everything that coaching requires. Tennis is the sport he knows best.
“I’ve always thought this sport looked fun so I decided to give it a try and it turns out I really love it and want to continue playing it throughout highschool,” Carr says. Taylor said that several of her family members encouraged her to play this sport.
As Carr states, “I just hope we continue to win our matches and just overall glad I’m with a team that’s there for eachother and I definitely made new friends from this experience,” Tennis is a great experience and sport for its team members and they hope for a great rest of the season.
As of right now, the courts have finished reconstructing and the tennis team has started the season back on home turf.
